Cracked masonry corner

This photo shows a corner of brick masonry wall sitting on a steel lintel. No control joints were designed in this masonry wall. Masonry wall thermal movements have built up on this corner and caused cracking and spalling. The lintel rusted and sagged. Rust can expand up to 10 times. In this case the rust build-up on the upper steel angle flange pushed lintel out of concrete slab face and also pushed brick outward. Rust build-up on the horizontal steel angle flange pushed the brick up widening the horizontal joint above lintel.
